Serving more than 65,000 visitors each year, Lawrence
General Hospital's Emergency Department is one of the five largest in
Massachusetts. With a projected 75,000 annual visits to the emergency
room by 2006, the hospital has embarked on an effort to expand and update
their emergency department to maintain quality patient care.
In 2002, Beals and Thomas conducted a feasibility study evaluating preferred
and alternative locations and related civil engineering issues for a proposed
building addition. The study provided layout, grading, and utility details
associated with both locations. A review of the local zoning requirements
and required permits were also included.
Lawrence General Hospital moved forward with the design and permitting
of the new emergency department at the alternative location, adjacent
to the Morse Building along Prospect Street. Although this location presented
a preferable alternative for visibility and access, the 30-foot grade
change and the presence of vital utility connections presented a significant
design challenge.
Beals and Thomas worked with Lavallee/Brensinger Architects to develop
an integrated building and site design concept. The new emergency department
will be supported on tall columns at the Prospect Street level of the
site. The area below will be used for two levels of parking and mechanical/electrical
support equipment. The design accommodates the hospital's desired expansion
program while minimizing the footprint of the new construction. Beals
and Thomas successfully represented the interests of Lawrence General
Hospital by obtaining approvals from the Lawrence Conservation Commission
and Board of Appeals.
