Beals and Thomas has been retained by Charles E. Smith Residential - a division of Archstone Smith, to provide civil engineering services and environmental permitting assistance for a proposed residential development in Cambridge, MA. The project represents the first step in the desired transformation of the North Point area of East Cambridge from an industrial district to a vibrant residential neighborhood. The project will revitalize and enhance the complex urban aspects the area, including a strong commitment to existing mass transit, pedestrian and bicycle use, open space and landscaping, and active street edges.

The site is composed of three parcels covering 5.7 acres and will provide approximately 767 residential units in two buildings with an underground parking garage containing 870 parking spaces. The buildings will also contain office space, cafés with outdoor seating areas, a fitness center, and a 2,400 square-foot retail store.

Beals and Thomas is providing civil engineering expertise to a comprehensive development team that includes The McKinnon Company, Goulston & Storrs PC, ADD, Inc., Carr, Lynch & Sandell, R. D. Vanasse & Associates, Haley & Aldrich, McNamara/Salvia, Cosentini Associates, and Suffolk Construction Company. Our responsibilities include the design of stormwater, sewerage, water, and other utility infrastructure to serve the project. These extensions have required the resolution of complex design issues that are constrained by existing infrastructure limitations, the dynamic nature of planned developments at adjacent properties, and the schedules of ongoing infrastructure construction projects affecting adjacent streets.
