The Old Manse

Boathouse and dock

Built in 1770 by the Reverend William Emerson, The Old Manse served not only as a colonial home but also as the inspiration for two of America's great literary figures, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne.

In an effort to enhance the property's historical value and ensure its continued preservation, The Trustees of Reservations began a restorative master plan aimed at returning the property to the way it appeared between 1875 and 1925. This effort required the reconstruction of all facilities located on the property, including a large barn, carriage shed, boathouse and dock.

Beals and Thomas was retained by The Trustees of Reservations to provide regulatory permitting, survey, and design services related to the reconstruction of the boathouse and dock, as well as the restoration of the adjacent river bank.
