Cronin's Landing is located adjacent to the Charles River in the heart of downtown Waltham. Once the site of the Grover Cronin Department Store, the architecturally historical building and economic anchor to the business district had been vacant for a number of years despite previous attempts at redevelopment. Beals and Thomas provided site planning, civil engineering, landscape architecture, surveying, and permitting services that included development of the Cronin's Landing Riverwalk, a 1,000-foot public walkway along the Charles River. The handicap-accessible brick and granite cobblestone walkway, supported by a docking facility, serves as the centerpiece for passive recreation in revitalization effort areas. Landscape design features, including Victorian-era lighting, decorative benches and a central seating plaza, reflect the project's designation within a historical district. State-of-the-art stormwater control, drainage, and irrigation measures ensure the health of trees and plantings while protecting the water quality of the Charles River.
