Beals and Thomas was retained by Alternatives Unlimited to evaluate their corporate headquarters for potential upgrade and development to green building standards. The study assessed the existing buildings using the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria. The information presented was used in support of the Green Building Design and Construction Grant application, submitted to the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC). A final program was identified that stressed combined renewable energy and energy conservation measures. The program included restoration of the mill’s former hydropower, including the installation of a new turbine and upgrades to its intake and tailrace structures. The existing buildings will be rehabilitated to accommodate future uses, including improvements to the mechanical systems, building envelopes, and space. Modifications to the existing structures will enhance the vitality of the site and complement the business district of Whitinsville, while maintaining its historic appearance. Alternatives Unlimited was successful in securing a grant from the MTC to help fund the design, permitting and installation of the hydroelectric power facility. Beals and Thomas successfully obtained the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Exemption Permit for the proposed 50 kw hydro power facility. Installation is currently in progress under the direction of Beals and Thomas.
